Deodorant Ingredients to Avoid (and What to Choose Instead)

Deodorant Ingredients to Avoid (and What to Choose Instead)

Flip any deodorant over and you're reading a chemistry exam. Some of those ingredients are doing honest work. Some of them you'd rather not rub into your skin every morning for the next forty years. Here's the no-hype breakdown — what to avoid, why, and what's overblown.

Aluminum compounds: the one to skip

Aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium — these are the active ingredients in antiperspirants, and they work by temporarily plugging the sweat ducts. That's the mechanism: less sweat by physical blockage.

We formulate without them, and here's our honest reasoning, no fear attached: sweating is a normal bodily function, and we'd rather manage odor while letting the body do what it does. If you want dryness at all costs, antiperspirants exist and we're not going to pretend they don't work. But a deodorant — our lane — should handle odor and let sweat be sweat. (We wrote the full aluminum piece here.)

Parabens: the preservative question

Methylparaben, propylparaben — preservatives that keep products shelf-stable. They've been the subject of years of debate, and while the science is still evolving, the precautionary read is simple: a well-formulated natural deodorant doesn't need them. If they're on the label, the brand chose cheap preservation over careful formulation. You can choose differently.

Phthalates (hidden in "fragrance"): the label loophole

Here's the sneaky one. When an ingredient list just says "fragrance" or "parfum" with no breakdown, that single word can legally hide dozens of compounds — including phthalates, which are used to make scents linger. The fix isn't complicated: choose brands that disclose their scent ingredients or use recognizable essential oils. "Fragrance" as a black box is a choice, and it's not yours.

Triclosan: the antibacterial overreach

An antibacterial agent that was once everywhere and has been falling out of favor for years — restricted in some products, phased out of others. In deodorant, it's overkill: you don't need to nuke your underarm microbiome, you need to manage odor. Magnesium hydroxide does that job without the scorched-earth approach.

Propylene glycol: the penetration enhancer

Common in conventional sticks as a carrier and moisture-holder. It's not the villain of the list, but it can irritate sensitive underarms — and in a natural formula, plant oils and butters do the carrying work better anyway. Worth noticing, not worth panicking over.

What's overblown

"All chemicals are bad." Everything is chemicals — water is a chemical. The question is never natural-vs-synthetic as a religion; it's what does this specific ingredient do, and do I want that done to my body daily? Sodium bicarbonate is a "chemical." So is the magnesium hydroxide we built our formula around. Judge ingredients, not categories.

"If you can't pronounce it, don't use it." Tocopherol is vitamin E. You can absolutely use tocopherol. The rule is a decent heuristic but a bad law.

What to reach for instead

The short list of ingredients doing honest work:

  • Magnesium hydroxide — the odor-neutralizing core. Gentle, effective, the reason our formula works.
  • Arrowroot powder — absorbs moisture without blocking anything.
  • Coconut oil & aloe — skin care built into the stick.
  • Tallow — the glide, the scent carriage, the apothecary heritage. Unapologetic.
  • Activated charcoal — moisture and odor absorption, and the reason CARBON is beautifully black.
  • Real botanicals — blue tansy, geranium, eucalyptus, peppermint. Scent you can trace to a plant.

The habit

Read the label every time — formulations change, brands get acquired, "new and improved" usually means something got swapped. Thirty seconds with the ingredient list beats thirty days of wondering why your underarms are angry.

Your skin keeps the score. Choose ingredients that deserve its trust. That's the INNERSLF label — read it anytime.
